The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an entrance examination conducted in India that primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of undergraduate subjects in engineering and sciences for admission into postgraduate programs. GATE is conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technologies at Roorkee, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Chennai (Madras) and Mumbai (Bombay) on behalf of the National Coordination Board – GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India.

GATE is conducted as a computer-based test (CBT) and evaluates the comprehensive understanding of the candidates in various undergraduate subjects in Engineering, Technology, Science, and Architecture; and both undergraduate and post-graduate level subjects in Humanities and Science.

The GATE score reflects the relative performance level of the candidate in a test paper. GATE 2024 score will be valid for THREE YEARS from the date of announcement of results. Qualifying in GATE is useful for seeking admission and/or financial assistance to:

  1. Master’s programs and direct Doctoral programs in Engineering/Technology/Architecture; and
  2. Doctoral programs in relevant branches of Engineering/Science/Technology/Architecture/Humanities, in institutions supported by MoE and other government agencies. Even in colleges and institutions that admit students without MoE scholarship/assistantship, GATE qualification may be useful.
